Colour Systems + UPRIGHT GALLERY

Colour Systems explores how colour can be organised, disrupted and reimagined through geometry, repetition and collage. Working between hand-cut paper compositions and digitally constructed prints, Leigh Bagley develops visual systems in which circles become a recurring language—measuring relationships between colour, proportion and form. These works investigate how abstract shapes generate rhythm, balance and movement. Drawing on traditions of modernist design while embracing the playfulness of pattern, the exhibition invites viewers to consider colour as something to experience rather than simply observe.

At the heart of this exhibition is the circle—not as a recurring motif, but as a tool for thinking through colour. Acting as a colour instrument, the circle provides a simple yet rigorous framework for investigating transparency, overlap, proportion and optical relationships. Through repetition and variation, each work examines how colour can be organised into visual systems that shift our perception of space, rhythm and balance. Moving between collage and print, the exhibition explores abstraction as a process of testing and refinement, where colour is not simply applied but constructed, experienced and continually reconfigured.
